5 Growing Problems Iraq, Afghanistan Wars Veterans Face (And What's Being Done)

Ten years after the U.S. first invaded Iraq, returning troops are filing for disability benefits, seeking education and employment assistance and struggling with combat trauma.

And they need solutions. As VA spending is set to climb, a number of public and private entities continue to step in and help address challenges confronted by vets -- many of which are unprecedented and increasing in scale.

Amid $1.7 trillion in U.S. war spending -- a number that could rise to $6 trillion over the years -- there is no special fund to address Iraq vets' medical and disability payments. When it comes to education, veterans are facing suspended tuition assistance. And female vets seek help in dealing with homelessness, post-military sexual abuse trauma and many other unique challenges.

UNEMPLOYMENT

FACT: Corporations, nonprofits and government agencies have all joined efforts to help combat the veteran unemployment rate, which hit 9.4 percent last month for post-9/11 veterans, up from 7.6 in the same period a year ealier. Many organizations have called on the government to strengthen The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), which provides employment assistance and protection against hiring discrimination. But in the meantime, a number of organizations are helping to fill in the gaps.

What's Being Done:
Hire Heroes USA provides personalized job training through one-on-one mentoring and matches veterans up with corporate partners.

Wall Street Warfighters is a six-month in-residence course for veterans. Extensive training is provided to prepare vets for a career in the finance industry.

 

DEVASTATING WOUNDS

FACT: Thanks to improved technology, more troops are surviving severe battlefield wounds than ever before. As of 2011, just 13 percent of troops injured in Iraq and Afghanistan died from the wounds they sustained, Dale Smith, a medical historian at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., told The Huffington Post. “[It’s] as a low a number as we’ve ever had,” he said.

While more veterans are returning home from battle (32, 221 came back from Iraq with combat wounds), that also means that more former servicemen and servicewomen are learning to live with catastrophic conditions, including genital wounds and amputations, that previous generations never before had to face.

What's Being Done:
The Wounded Warrior Project helps veterans with both their physical and invisible wounds -- with a special emphasis on stress relief -- as they adjust to life on the home front.

Homes For Our Troops raises money and provides services to build specially adapted homes for injured heroes.

 

MENTAL HEALTH

FACT: While the VA is working to improve its mental health services, suicide and PTSD rates remain alarmingly high. About 22 veterans committed suicide each day in 2010 and 228,875 troops who served in Iraq or Afghanistan returned with PTSD as of 2012, a crippling condition some experts say close relatives can contract.

Still, many vets say they’re reluctant to seek help because of how it may affect their reputations.

"Soldiers are encouraged by lower-level leadership and their peers not to get help because of the stigma," Iraq War veteran Curtis Sirmans told HuffPost Live in January. "If you go to get help, you'll be chastised by your peers."

What's Being Done:
The Veterans Crisis Line connects veterans with members in the VA through phone, chat or text, to provide care and even life-saving rescues to vets during this critical time.

Give An Hour calls on mental health professionals to donate an hour of their time to troops and their families.\

 

HOMELESSNESS

FACT: The number of homeless veterans in the U.S. dropped by about 7 percent last year, but some experts remain skeptical whether the Obama administration will be able to reach its goal eliminating the issue completely by 2015. The VA will have to accommodate more vets as the Pentagon shrinks the number of troops serving over the next several years, female vets remain the fastest growing population among the homeless and some veterans say they’re simply reluctant to deal with a bureaucratic VA.

What's Being Done:
The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans -- a nonprofit network of local, state and federal agencies -- provides housing, food, health services and job training to thousands of homeless veterans every year.

Operation Dignity offers transitional housing for homeless vets throughout California. The organization also provides health care assistance, parenting classes, relapse prevention, anger management training, empowerment training and more. The site indicates that a $25 donation can provide school supplies for kids and $100 can cover job training for a homeless vet.

EDUCATION

FACT: Amid the $85 billion in sequester cuts that went into effect at the beginning of the month, the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard and Marines have suspended their Tuition Assistance (TA) programs, which gave military members as much as $4,500 a year in financial aid. The VA is spared from the cuts. Several colleges are deferring tuition charges and nonprofits are offering ways to assist.

NEWS JUST IN - 7/28/13 - 30 days of vigorous work digging 20,000 "Military Grave's!"

More than one source has reported recently that they are witnessing some graveyards as well as large areas of privet property digging mass plots to house (what looks like) multitudes of shallow gaves.  Also they are reporting that empty grave containers are being placed inside the shallows at some sites and where the containers are being placed, they are kind of covering them back up with a few inches of soil.  One source reported that this was the case at a cemetary near their home.  When they approached one of the grave diggers and started asking questions, the individual digging these shallows, reluctantly and after much encouragement stated, that " the graves are for the military...   What??! 

 

It makes no sense in a rational world.  However if you consder what I do believe is occuring in our times now, it scares me to death and absolutly outrages me in so more many new ways.  Who the hell do these peolpe think they are.  You as good citizens should want to find out the truth about this war on our troos and put a stop to what is going on here, I know I want to stop it!  UNRELATED FACT: On average, 23 troops everyday are committing suicide. Why!

LAST year, more active-duty soldiers committed suicide than died in battle. This fact has been reported so often that it has almost lost its jolting force. Almost.

Worse, according to data not reported on until now, the military evidently responded to stress that afflicts soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan primarily by drugging soldiers on the front lines. Data that I have obtained directly from Tricare Management Activity, the division of the Department of Defense that manages health care services for the military, shows that there has been a giant, 682 percent increase in the number of psychoactive drugs — antipsychotics, sedatives, stimulants and mood stabilizers — prescribed to our troops between 2005 and 2011. That’s right. A nearly 700 percent increase — despite a steady reduction in combat troop levels since 2008.

The prescribing trends suggest that the military often uses medications in ways that are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration and do not comport with the usual psychiatric standards of practice.

The military tests prospective enlistees with an eye toward screening out those with serious psychiatric disorders. So you would expect that the use of these drugs in the military would be minimal — and certainly less than in the civilian population. But the opposite is true: prescriptions written for antipsychotic drugs for active-duty troops increased 1,083 percent from 2005 to 2011; the number of antipsychotic drug prescriptions in the civilian population increased just 22 percent from 2005 to 2011, according to IMS Health, an independent medical data company.

When Edward Snowden blew the whistle and exposed NSA spying on Americans, he did the right thing. He honored the oath he swore to defend the Constitution by warning We the People of what was being done to us, by our own government, in direct violation of the Constitution. Snowden could not use the “normal” channels for reporting unlawful behavior because our government is controlled and dominated by oath breaking criminals and Constitution killers, from top to bottom. It is absurd to demand that he report crimes against the Constitution to the very criminals who are committing those crimes. They are not going to hold themselves accountable. The only recourse is to blow the whistle to the real bosses, the American people, so the people can hold them accountable. And that is exactly what Snowden did. And that is exactly what you should do if you have similar knowledge of violations of the rights of the American people and violations of the Constitution you swore an oath to defend. You have a duty to speak out.

The regime, and those complicit in its crimes, want you to think that speaking out and exposing them is “treason.” This should come as no surprise. No oppressive regime in the history of the world, no budding dictatorship, ever acknowledged the illegality and illegitimacy of its actions. To the contrary, every oppressive regime that has infested a nation has perverted the host country’s legal system to make its crimes “legal” and to turn the legal system into a weapon to silence not just dissent, but also to silence those who seek to expose its crimes. It is no different here, in the United States. As Congressman Ron Paul noted, “truth is treason in the empire of lies.” That is what the regime believes. But in reality, silence is treason when our Republic is being destroyed from within.

You have a duty to speak out, to expose what is being done to the American people and what is being planned to be done to them. Brzezinski published those lines in 1970. There is a plan, a drive, a sinister lurking power seeking to control the world’s population and restructure our social and cultural mores in ways no free people can peacefully accept. That is where the NSA and so many other facets of our Intelligence community are in need of having a little bit of light shown upon them. But about Brzezinski – He was President Carter’s National Security Adviser; he is the guy who helped engineer the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1979; he is the co-founder with David Rockefeller of the Tri-Lateral Commission. He is also one of President Obama’s closest advisers. He’s a player, and he’s not elected – he is the footman for the internationalist coterie of financiers, and, like his running buddy Henry Kissinger, he is one of the most powerful men in Washington D.C. And he published the above in 1970, forty-three years ago.

What we’re seeing here today is the manifestation of a long-held plan by the most powerful men.  Brzezinski is part of the machinery which moves the biggest powers on earth, and he saw back then (1970) the potential to control society, to assemble databases, to “…assert almost continuous surveillance over every citizen and maintain up-to-date complete files containing even the most personal information about the citizen. These files will be subject to instantaneous retrieval by the authorities.”

This has been built deliberately, using tax payers’ dollars to subjugate all taxpayers over decades. This goes to the anatomy of the mechanism. It is deified statism (worship of the state as omnipotent God). And Washington D.C. is afloat with people who believe the statist line as if it were a religion.  Brzezinski and ilk are inspired to control and regulate society, and they just chance to believe that society should be a socialist utopia. If that sounds bizarre, consider this, which Brzezinski also has published:
